Israelis are busy finalizing preparations to welcome Air Force One on Wednesday. President Obama will arrive with an entourage of some 500 Secret Service agents and others White House and State Department staff and advisors for a state visit that will last through Friday, when they head to Amman, Jordan.

Here’s some of the latest coverage of the preparations:

Man to watch as new Israeli government takes office: Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon. Here’s why. (Hint: he once called war with Iran “inevitable.”)

Interviewing Yaalon at the 2010 Epicenter Conference in Philadelphia.

Interviewing Yaalon at the 2010 Epicenter Conference in Philadelphia.

Members of Israel’s 33rd (modern) government took the oath of office in Jerusalem today. Below is a list of the key players. But after the Prime Minister himself, the man to watch is new Defense Minister Moshe (“Bogie”) Yaalon.

Those who have watched the Epicenter documentary film will recall that Yaalon told me that war with Iran is “inevitable.”

“The problem,” he said, “is a lack of clarity in the West. Actually, Western people are sleeping [to the threat of jihadist attack]….Only a few leaders understand it. And we need to wake up. We need an awakening. Otherwise, it will be too late.”

“The confrontation with this regime [in Iran] is inevitable,” Yaalon noted. “And it’s going to be a military one, rather than a political one, because of the lack of determination when it comes to the international community to deal with it with economic and political means. And we can’t avoid it.”

Those who attended the 2010 Epicenter Conference in Philadelphia will recall that Yaalon was our keynote speaker, and received three standing ovations. In his message, and in my interview with him following his remarks, Yaalon noted that a war between Israel and Iran may not be far off and warned Iranian leaders to choose “The Bomb” or “survival.” Yaalon said at the time that he agreed with the U.S. assessment that Iran is between one and three years away from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He said there was still time to stop Iran, but time was running out.

So who is Moshe Yaalon and why do his views matter so much? I don’t see Yaalon as eager to go to war, but he is ready if it’s necessary. Indeed, I believe he is the right man for this job at this time. Here is a quick snapshot of why he is now the man to watch:

  • Yaalon is a thoughtful, reserved, brilliant and principled man who would oversee Israel’s war(s) with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas, should they be necessary.

  • A highly experienced and decorated officer and commander in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

  • Served as head of military intelligence.

  • Served as IDF chief of staff under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, but left office when he sharply disagreed with Sharon’s decision to unilaterally surrender the Gaza Strip.

  • A highly-trusted counselor to Netanyahu.

  • Served as Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Strategic Affairs in last government.

  • A hardliner against making hasty and unwise concessions to the Palestinian Authority.

  • While not opposed in principle to a preemptive strike against Iran, Yaalon has been a voice of caution to Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Ehud Barak about moving too fast, and moving without American support and coordination.

  • Here’s his official bio.

  • FYI: January 12th blog: “With elections fast approaching, will this man be Israel’s next Defense Minister?”

“I stand here before you, burning memories in my heart, great hopes in my soul. I carry profound pain concerning the past. And look with confident eyes to the future.”

Israeli President Shimon Peres, 89, today addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It was powerful and personal and beautiful and brilliant. It was also historic. He spoke of being born and raised in Europe and having to leave before the Holocaust destroyed his family. He spoke of the deep and sordid historic enmity between Europe and the Jews, but also of how Europe changed after World War II and came to help Israel and the Jewish people.

“Peres’s speech was the first time a senior Israeli official addressed the European parliament in its current extended format with 754 members from 27 member states,” notes the Times of Israel. “In 1985, then-president Chaim Herzog spoke to the parliament in Strasbourg; at the time, the union had only 10 members.”

“The idea of the rebirth of Israel was born on European soil,” said Peres. “In the past thousand years, more Jews lived in Europe than in any other continent. Alas, more Jews were murdered in Europe in the last hundred years than in the preceding two thousand years. We experienced here the worst tragedy of our history. Here we dreamed an impossible rebirth. Six million, a third of our people, were murdered here by starvation, gas, rifles and fire. What remains from them is ashes. We shall not forget that the righteous among the nations carried candles of light in the darkness. They were small in number but great in heroism. Israel was born from the ashes at the end of the Second World War. If someone had stood up then and said that within three years a Jewish state would be created – he would have been considered a delirious visionary. But the dream became a reality.”

>> Peres: Iran is the greatest danger to world peace — the president, in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, calls to label Hezbollah a terror organization.

The threats posed by Iran and Syria were major themes in the address, new existential threats no less dangerous than the European Holocaust. The Israeli leader “called on the international community Tuesday to limit Iran’s production of the long-range missiles that could deliver nuclear weapons, in addition to restricting the regime’s uranium enrichment program.” He also “appealed to the European Union to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization,” noted the Times. “He said he opposed Western intervention in Syria, suggesting instead that the Arab League form a provisional government in Syria that would attempt to stop the bloodshed.”

“I believe that in addition to controlling the production of highly enriched uranium there is a need to control the means of delivery, to control the production of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads,” Peres told the EU leaders. “Khamenei declared that religion prohibits the production and the use of nuclear arms. Why, then, does he build missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads?” Peres asked, referring to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. He called the regime in Tehran the “greatest danger to peace in the world,” and urged the EU to condemn Iran’s human rights violations as they condemed Soviet violations during the Cold War.

Here is the full text of the Peres speech. I commend it to your attention.

No Time to Panic: Strategic Survival Expert Joel Skousen Survives Plane Crash

Former Marine fighter pilot and well known strategic relocation survival expert Joel Skousen (WorldAffairsBrief.com) was flying home from Las Vegas this week when his experimental Glasair I aircraft experienced an unrecoverable problem with the plane’s fuel flow system. According to first responders on the scene the plane was, “completely totaled in the wreck, after flipping and partially detaching the wings.”

“It’s the first time I’ve done an accident, an engine-out landing to a field,” said Skousen.

“When I slowed down to put the landing gear down and went to put power back on, to reach speed, it wouldn’t come back up.”

“As a longtime pilot for many, many years, you read about a lot of accidents,” he said.

You’re trained to go through these procedures of trying to get that engine restarted, throwing on the pumps, throwing the booster, checking the fuel. And so you really don’t have time to panic because you are going through procedures.

Skousen was not seriously injured in the crash, receiving only a few cuts and bruises. He was not transported to a hospital.

“Emotionally, it’s really tough to go through an accident,” Skousen said.

I’m very blessed. There’s no other way to describe coming out of that with only a couple of scratches.

As Joel Skousen himself notes, the accident could have been much worse than it was. Providence and a little bit of ‘luck’ played a significant role in his coming out of this nearly unscathed.

His efforts in the midst of the emergency, however, should not be downplayed. Having trained as a fighter pilot for years, Skousen is well versed in the procedures required to counter-act such a situation. He had a plan and followed procedures step-by-step, even in the midst of what must have been a very high intensity, high stress environment.

His training paid off. He didn’t panic. His focus during a far-from-equilibrium crisis no doubt played a role in his surviving the crash, because had he panicked he may have made mistakes that could have led to a completely different set of circumstances.

Plan. Prepare. Practice. It may save your life.

Editor’s Note: We’re thankful Mr. Skousen walked away with minor injuries. Thousands of people have benefited greatly from his willingness to share his wisdom and knowledge. We wish him the very best. When asked by reporters what he would do next, Skousen smilingly replied, “I got two more kits in the hanger, build another airplane and go at it again.” It’s a testament to his die-hard spirit. CONFISCATION: Panicked Europeans Rush ATMs as Leaders Move To Seize Funds Directly From Bank Account Holders

Over the last few years political and financial leaders in Europe and the United States have implemented policies, regulations and bailouts costing global taxpayers trillions of dollars with the promise that these measures would lead to economic growth and recovery.

What happened in Europe today is yet further proof that nothing they’ve done has fixed the underlying fundamental issues surrounding the events that led to the crash of 2008.

For those who don’t believe the government is prepared to take extreme measures that may include the seizing of retirement accounts, cash savings or even gold, look no further than Cyprus, the latest recipient of bank bailouts.

As of right now, citizens of Cyprus are scrambling to withdraw funds from their bank accounts after the EU, with agreement from the Cypriot government, announced they will decimate funds held in personal bank accounts to the tune of up to 10% of existing deposits.

You read that right.

The European Union has made the determination that the people of Cyprus are now responsible for the hundreds of billions of dollars in bad bets made by their government and bank financiers, and they are moving to confiscate money directly from the bank accounts of every citizen in the country.

Restrictions have been imposed to stop people emptying their accounts or moving their money out the country after the Cypriot government announced that up to ten per cent of deposits will be seized and used to bailout the island’s crisis-hit banking system.

The deal with other eurozone finance ministers is the first time that ordinary citizens’ deposits have been directly raided in this way.

One furious expat said: ‘This is plain theft. I’d love to hear someone explain to me why it isn’t.’

Under the deal, all bank deposits over €100,000 will be hit with a levy of 9.9 per cent. Those with smaller savings will pay 6.75 per cent.

The move sparked panic and violent protests yesterday as crowds desperately tried to withdraw their money at cash machines.

‘Why would you risk putting your money in Greek, Spanish or Portuguese banks after this?’

British expats were stunned by the news, with many left high and dry by the restrictions on accounts.

Cash machines had been working, but many ran out of notes because of the panic withdrawals.

But financial experts said the raid – designed to stop Cyprus crashing out of the euro, potentially destroying the currency – would send shock waves through the eurozone.

If savers in other troubled nations fear their accounts might be next, they could withdraw their money and spark a catastrophic run on the  banks.

They’re calling it a “tax.”

As Market Ticker’s Karl Denninger notes, “Like hell that’s a tax.  That’s direct confiscation of the funds of people who did nothing wrong!”

It should now be obvious. There is no recovery. There never was.

No matter where you live, your government is likely preparing measures to deal with the coming financial and economic collapse. This means they are going to be coming for anything of value that they can get their hands on.

If you have the majority of your net worth allocated in bank accounts, money market funds, retirement plans, stock markets or the host of other ‘safe’ assets recommended by your financial adviser, then you are playing Russian roulette.

And in this version there’s a bullet in every chamber.

When they come, they will take everything they can.
